Comprehensive Guide to Buying New Carpeting

So you’re in the market for a new carpet. We’ve got all the information you need to get the right carpet fiber and weave for your needs. Here’s a few questions to answer before you check out the different types of fibers and weaves.

Three Important Questions

  1. Where is the carpet going to be installed?

Rooms that see a lot of activity and foot traffic need more durable fibers and weaves.

  1. Do you have children or pets?

If you have children and/or pets, you need to shop for weaves and fibers that resist stain and can receive stain treatments.

  1. What do you like or dislike about your current carpet?

Figure out what you like and dislike about your current carpet so you can get the perfect match for your needs.

Carpet Fibers

  • Nylon

Nylon fiber carpet is the most popular out there, and for good reason. It’s also the strongest and most durable of all the fibers available.

  • Polyester

The advantage to polyester carpeting is that it’s more stain resistant and fade resistant than other fibers. What it lacks in softness, it makes up for in durability and longevity.

  • Triexta

Extremely soft, triexta is made of 39% corn sugars and polyester. Unfortunately it cannot be treated with stain and soil resistance systems.

  • Olefin

This synthetic material is used in carpeting, wallpaper, ropes, and vehicle interiors. It’s durable, relatively inexpensive, and resistant to staining, mildew, abrasion, and sunlight.

  • Wool

Wool is the Cadillac of carpet fibers. It’s a premier choice, offering advantages across the board in durability, longevity, maintenance, and comfort.

Carpet Weaves

  • Loop

Loop carpeting is all about durability. Excellent for high-traffic areas like stairs, hallways, or workout areas.  Softer than texture.

  • Texture

A more traditional look that’s also good for high traffic areas like stairs and hallways, texture carpeting is short and resistant.

  • Twist

A little softer than loop carpeting, but still with lots of durability, twist carpeting is ideal for bedrooms, TV rooms, or offices.

  • Pattern

Patterned carpeting is intense. It strikes the eye. Recommended for formal rooms and dining rooms that need some character.
