- Seal all the possible places for air leaks and water intrusion. Sealing these leaks can prevent mold from growing in your home and can prevent heat from escaping your house in the winter. When you plan on adding new space, make sure to fill the openings with low-expansion foam or packed insulation. Also, seal around the electrical outlets and switch boxes.
- Make sure your house also has adequate ventilation. While it is important to make sure air leaks are plugged, your home will also need proper ventilation to make sure moisture and odors do not seep in. Proper ventilation will reduce the workload of your air conditioners as well. Make sure your attic gets the ventilation it needs by placing a vent on the roof and put ventilation chutes between the rafters to improve airflow.
- Make sure you have ENERGY STAR appliances. Look for the ENERGY STAR logo on appliances you plan to upgrade. These products use less energy and cost less to operate. If you are planning to upgrade your central air conditioning system this summer, use an ENERGY STAR air conditioner.
