How To Deal With Plumbing Issues

Plumbing issues can cause some huge hassles and if left unresolved, could cause additional costly damage to your home. Depending on where your leaks are occurring, if you don’t fix your plumbing issues, it could lead to wood rot or mold damage, which could further accelerate problems. As the weather becomes warmer, it is a perfect time to address any plumbing concerns you have around the house. Take these tips into consideration as you inspect the plumbing in your home:

  • Leaky faucets. These are the first things you should check for during an inspection of your home’s plumbing system. If you do find a leaky faucet, it could be fixed by simply replacing and greasing the seat and spring at the bottom of the stem underneath the faucet.
  • Hidden leaks. Sometimes, people forget to check under the sink for any leaks. Inside a cabinet is the perfect place for mold to grow, and could eventually rot the wood of your cabinets. You could literally “sniff” out a leak when you open a cabinet and the smell of mold hits your senses. Sometimes, all it takes is a new riser to repair a leak that is occurring underneath your sink.
  • Cleaning your showerhead. There could be a mineral deposit that accumulates over time inside your showerhead. To clean it, fill a plastic bag with vinegar and secure the bag around the showerhead. Allow it to sit overnight, and it should unclog your showerhead.
  • Check your water heater. One of the problems that could affect your water heater is corrosion, which could reduce its lifespan. To prevent corrosion, drain a few gallons from the tank to flush out the sediment.
  • Clean the gutters. In the winter, debris builds up in your gutters which can cause clogs. This may lead to water damage, mold growth, or leaks. Simply cleaning the gutters will prevent this from occurring.
  • Checking toilets for leaks. Your toilet is another place where a hidden leak could occur. Just put food coloring inside the tank and if the water changes color, you have a leak on your hands. Also, make sure the toilet is properly flushing.
