One home repair that isn’t catastrophic but a total inconvenience is having a broken toilet lever. When these break, flushing becomes an absolute hassle. Luckily, there is a simple fix for broken toilet levers. Today, I’ll teach you how to repair this pesky break.
Prior to installing a new toilet lever, you’ll have to remove the old one. Start by shutting off the water valve to the toilet. Then flush the toilet. This may require you to take off the top of the water tank and then pull the chain up. Allow the water in the tank to completely drain.
If you’ve already removed the lid to the tank, then proceed to remove the wing nut that holds the lever up against the tank. You’ll want to keep this to the side for the new handle. Continue by removing the nut from the back of the toilet lever. You can do this by using your finger for a plastic handle or a wrench for a medal lever. Remember to unscrew it clockwise since these are thread in reverse. Pull the handle through the front of the tank, remove the washer and nut from the back of the tank. You may discard these.
Now that you have the old lever removed, you will want to install the new lever. Start by removing the nut and washer from the back of the new handle. Then insert and push the back of the new handle through the front hole in the toilet. Put the washer on the new handle’s stem and screw on the nut.
Lift up the toilet lever and push it at the end of the handle stem. You can then screw on the wing nut at end of the toilet lever, this will hold it in place. You can now turn back on the water valve. This will allow the tank to refill.
You will want to flush the toilet to make sure that it works properly. Hoping all goes to plan, you will then be able to put back the lid on the toilet’s tank. You should now have a new, functionally working toilet handle.
